Most of Eric Coates’ compositions fall into two main categories- orchestral works, and songs. Most widely known of these are “The Dam Busters” and “By The Sleepy Lagoon”, made famous as the theme to the BBC Radio programme, Desert Island Discs. The “Three Lyric Pieces”, with a handful of other works fall outside these two categories, and have sadly become rather neglected. They were possibly written to fulfil contractual obligations at the time to his publisher- which might suggest their brevity and indeed the title of the first one- “A Fragment”. In any case, reflecting Coates’ effortless style, and imbued with sumptuous harmonies, these short salon pieces for piano are a wonderful re-discovery.
As a soloist, Ben Dawson has performed and broadcast concertos with some of the world’s most renowned orchestras; including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony and the Ulster Orchestra. Ben has also recorded as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic & BBC Concert Orchestras.
