Dialogues: I Symmetry
Tom Freeman-Attwood & Richard Blake - Trumpets
Symmetry is Richard Blake’s first EP in a series of “Dialogues” projects with Luminate Records – joined here with regular collaborator Tom Freeman-Attwood in an exploration of trumpet duo repertoire spanning centuries. Built around a symmetrical arch of 20th Century fanfares by Stravinsky and Satie, and 16th Century fantasias by Orlando Gibbons, the central pillar of Eugène Bozza’s eponymous “Dialogue pour deux Trompettes” is a dazzling example of the range of contrasts and colours possible when writing for two of these versatile instruments.
The fantasias by Gibbons, originally for viols, are witty works of interplay between two voices – sometimes imitating, sometimes chasing, but always moving. The opening fanfare by Stravinsky is a real statement of intent pushing both tonal and metric boundaries, while Satie’s Carillon is a very playful imitation of ringing bells, ending the programme with a cheerful smile.
