An anonymous 16th century English song, Coventry Carol comes from mystery play “The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors” which was performed traditionally in the city of Coventry. Aside from its hauntingly beautiful melody, it contains a well known example of the “Picardy third”, essentially a major key (happy) resolution to a phrase expected to continue in a minor key (sad).
Having heard the beautiful arrangement of this carol by Michael McGlynn performed by vocal ensemble ANÚNA a few years ago Jeremy Watt felt compelled to record it with a “consort of double basses” in a release that he hopes will raise money for an important charity in his adopted home of Coventry that supports rough sleepers and those facing homelessness – Crisis Skylight Coventry.
