Piano Quintet in A minor, Op.84 (Live) - Edward Elgar
CBSO Chamber Musicians
Edward Elgar’s Piano Quintet in A minor, Op. 84 was composed in 1918–1919 while he was staying at Brinkwells, his Sussex retreat. It is a deeply expressive piece, blending Romantic lyricism with moments of mystery and drama.
The work consists of three movements: Moderato – Allegro, Adagio, and Andante – Allegro. The first movement features dramatic contrasts between dark, brooding themes and sweeping, lyrical passages.
The hauntingly beautiful second movement is filled with deep melancholy and introspection, often considered one of Elgar’s most profound slow movements.
The final movement brings resolution with a triumphant yet nostalgic character. The quintet reflects Elgar’s late style, influenced by personal struggles and the shadow of World War I.
1. Moderato – Allegro (Live) 14:16
2. Adagio (Live) 11:11
3. Moderato – Allegro (Live). 10:17
